“At least we got that out of our system,” I said.

My minute was over.

I rolled off the bed and shimmied into his tee, which I grabbed from the pile of clothes on the floor.

I headed to the bathroom to clean up. When I returned, Vince was still naked, propped up against the pillows. His golden skin was a sharp contrast against the dove-gray sheets. I tried hard not to ogle, but the man had a magnificent body.

“Explain” was all he said. He sounded pissed.

I folded my arms into my stomach. “Explain what?”

“That crack about getting it out of our system.”

“It wasn’t a crack, it was the truth,” I said, and his face went sour. “Look, we’ve pretended to be a couple for, what, nearly three months now? It’s natural that certain… well… feelings would develop.”

“What kind of feelings?” he asked.

“The sexual ones.”

“Oh, the sexual ones,” he mocked. “Of course.”

“Come on, Vince, you know there was tension.” I motioned to the bed. “Clearly.”

He shot up from the bed and got between me and the door. “Yes, Lydon, there was tension between us. I felt it. Hell, half of Los Angeles probably felt it, that’s how strong it was.”

“And now we’ve dealt with it.”

“You think that this”—it was his turn to wave his arms toward the bed—“was dealing with it?”

I angled my way around him toward the door. “I think we now know what intercourse feels like with each other, so we broke the tension.”

“Intercourse?” he asked, blocking me from the exit. “You’re calling what we just did intercourse?”

“What else would you call it?”

“Screwing. Boning. Making love. Hell, anything but intercourse. It makes it sound like we just took a test.”

My eyes narrowed. “Well, you passed with flying colors. Can I go now?”

“Where are you going?”

“To finish making dinner and then to the hospital.”

“Then what?”

“To bed, I suppose. Why?”

He stretched out his arm and gestured to his California king. “When you come home, I want you here. In this bed.”

“No, I’m going to my room.”

“You come to me, Lydon.”

“Nope.”

“Jesus.” He pushed his hand into his hair in frustration. “No wonder Chad—”

“Stop!” I yelled, pressing my hand into the scar when it began to burn.

Chad. He’d brought up Chad. Now? And like that?

I wiped at my eyes, which were now wet. Now the asshole had made me cry.

“Lydon, I’m sorry.” Vince reached for me. “I didn’t mean—”

“It’s fine,” I snapped at him.

His hands came to my forearms, and he gently tried to tug them away from my chest. “Ly, babe.”

“I said I’m fine!” I dropped my arms with a violent shake to remove his touch, which had lit my skin on fire.

He raised his hands in surrender and leaned back. “I’m sorry. Just… sorry.”

That got a curt nod from me before I marched to the door and out of his room, scooping up my clothes along the way. I nearly sprinted through the house and down the stairs to my room, not daring to breathe until the door was closed tight behind me. I leaned against it and unleashed a torrent of tears.
